Every person who works at Six Flags says that..."Have a Six Flags Day!" We bought season passes to Six Flags this summer and the boys have LOVED it. Here are just a few shots from one of our trips.

We watched Matthew while Adam and Lisa went to the Temple and he was doing really well for about the first half hour, but as he got sleepy he was having a rough time without Mommy and Daddy. So, Jared came home and took him out to mow the lawn. Matthew LOVED it and fell asleep immediately after. Fun times with Uncle Jared!

JJ's Preschool Graduation

JJ finished his first year of preschool! He did such a good job. He had to overcome some fears in the beginning of the year but he ended so strong. He absolutely loved building with the blocks, painting, doing wood crafts, and playing outside. They played outside every day that it didn't rain--they even played in the snow during the winter! We are so happy for our JJ and are looking forward to another year at the CLC Tech Campus Preschool with Mrs. Schuyler and Ms. Goodman.

Pumpkin Patch

We went to the pumpkin patch to pick out our pumpkins for Halloween. Ben came along too - the boys had a great time. They loved being able to pick from the small pumpkins because they could pick them up and put them in the wagon themselves. JJ especially loved picking out all sorts of gourdes.

At one point one of the animals made a really loud sound and scared Luke so bad he tried to run but just ended up falling in the dirt. He had immediate crocodile tears...poor guy!

Opening presents...I got some jewelry and a sewing machine and accessories!! I am so excited to get started on some fun projects.

Make a wish...Jared took a day off of work so I could go and do whatever I wanted for a day! It was fabulous! I got my hair cut and drove to Wisconsin for a baby resale. It was nice to shop all by myself!

Today was an exciting day!! We had our ultrasound and found out we are due with a little girl on February 6. JJ came to the ultrasound with us while Luke stayed with Grandma Marta. JJ did great and liked being able to see her move - she was VERY active and the ultrasound tech said she was having a hard time getting some pictures and measurements because she was so active! This will be a very new and fun change for our little family of boys!

This is JJ at the doctor's office. He did really well and so he got to have a little sucker...YUM!

While JJ was at preschool today Luke wanted to watch Thomas. So I turned on the TV and noticed soon after that it was very quiet. Luke had crawled up on the chair to snuggle with this long pillow (his favorite of the couch pillows). What a little cutie!

I came down just a few minutes later and this is what I found...precious.

JJ's First Day of Preschool!

JJ had his first day of Preschool today and he was SO excited! I know it's good when he doesn't fight me taking lots of pictures of him! He chose his own shoes and his own shirt and felt very proud about that. He was really happy to wear his fish backpack (the same one he uses to go fishing with Dad).

When we had the parent orientation meeting, they explained to us that the doorway to the classroom is kind of the dividing line between parents and children, meaning that once the child has entered the room confidently, they don't want the parent stepping in or calling the child back. I thought to myself, "Well yeah, of course. Why would someone call their child back when they've gone in willingly?" I had planned on taking a picture of JJ at the door by his teacher before he went in. When we got to the school he ran ahead of me and went right into his classroom without hesitation. And it was just then that I did exactly the thing I thought was so silly and I started to call him back to take a picture. His sweet teacher kindly reminded me that he was happy and safe and that we could snap some photos when I came to pick him up. But, then I forgot to do that! What a day. Anyway, we got some good ones at home before he left and that is still good!

While JJ was at school, Luke and I did some shopping and playing and he took a little nap in the car...wow, it was really pleasant getting to spend some one-on-one time with Luke! He needs some good time before #3 comes the first of February! Oh yeah...I'm pregnant! We find out the gender on the 20th. More to come!!

Happy Labor Day!

For Labor Day we headed over to Illinois Beach State Park to play in the sand (playing in the water here is out of the question...it's like ICE!). The boys love playing in the sand so we decided it would be fun to take them to the biggest sand box they've seen! We built castles, stuck our toes in the water VERY briefly, ate lunch, and just relaxed--my kind of relaxing family day!

Jared used to mow the lawn with JJ on his shoulders all the time, but now that he's a bit bigger, he likes to push his own lawn mower and let Luke go for a ride. This was Luke's first lawn-mowing shoulder ride! He did a great job!

Luke has almost no fear, and so he had no problem riding on Jared's shoulders without holding on--thus, Jared's grip on Luke's leg while mowing the lawn one-handed!

The whole time I was out there taking pictures, Luke kept yelling, "cheeeeese!" So, Jared finally stopped so we could get a close-up and satisfy his love for the camera.

JJ's 3rd Birthday Party--Gone Fishing!

JJ had his first "friend" party this year, and I think he's converted! He had a great time "fishing" with his little friends. Here's what we did:

We started the party with fun songs and games with "Fisherman Jared." But, of course Jared had to try out his new wheelbarrow he got for his birthday. So, he gave kids rides up the hill to the tent where they were "Going on a Bear Hunt!"

Make a wish! He loves blowing out candles. He got so good at it that he blew out Mina's candles for her at her party...Mina was NOT thrilled. Now that we've taught him how to blow out candles, I guess we should work on WHICH candles are okay to blow out!

YUM! JJ picked the cake, frosting, and ice cream flavors all on his own. "Pink" cake with chocolate frosting. "Pink" and chocolate ice cream. He must love pink because he rarely gets anything that's pink!

This was the quietest they were the whole party!

And we ended the party with a water balloon toss...great fun! The kids had a great time and no one got TOO wet!

Jared's Birthday is August 23rd and JJ's Birthday is August 24th. We've done joint parties with Papa Rudy up until this year when we decided to let JJ have a friend party. Well, Daddy's party turned into JJ's party too! I think half of the gifts there were for JJ! We still had a little family party planned for him on his actual birthday so we still did that. JJ is going to have a week-long celebration!

Daddy wrestling with the boys...their favorite! JJ and Luke love to sit on Jared's stomach and bounce--they say, "wanna go boom on daddy!" We've learned that "going boom" is a Daddy-only-activity. Mommy doesn't do as well with that game!

Recently Jared was laying sod and I looked outside to find him using my double jogging stroller with a big tarp draped over it to haul the sod...very creative, but I decided a wheelbarrow could be really useful!

Okay, so this is JJ's party the next day. Luke took advantage of JJ's distraction with the school bus lunch box (from Aunt Gina) to have a try at JJ's new t-ball set.

JJ loves school buses and frequently asks when he will get to ride on the bus. We tell him that when he is six he can ride the bus to kindergarten. Recently he started telling me that he is six so he can ride the bus. What a little cutie.

Jared took JJ on his first fishing trip today!

Jared woke JJ up at 5:45 AM to walk to the lake. JJ was THRILLED. He just got his new Lightning McQueen fishing pole and he's ready to use it!

but...once they got started, JJ realized that he really liked his fishing pole, not what it caught on the line! He would not go near the fish (or the pole for that matter) once a fish would bite. This is JJ posing about three feet away from his first fish (while Daddy holds the pole and the camera...go Dad).

After they got back from fishing, I loaded the boys in the car and we went to a race for sweet Ashton, who has cancer. I pushed the double jogging stroller with both boys AND I was preggo...yikes! It was good to run it with Natalie though...we kept each other going and we ran the whole thing! JJ's favorite part about the race was that Spider Man and Batman were there at the end. They were so good and played with JJ on the playground for a long time.

I've had some strange rush of motivation to cook new things lately! Tonight I made a yummy quiche with a recipe from allrecipes.com. It came out really tasty. It looked so good I had to take a picture.

It passed the true test...the boys ate tons of it!

Luke's First Haircut

Here is a picture of Luke after his first haircut. I should have taken a before picture because he had really cute curls in the back. We decided it was time to cut his hair when a lady in the store said to JJ, "and is this your little sister?" Of course he had a total BOY outfit on, but I guess his hair threw her off!

He did a great job - so calm and happy. He played with his little toy...

...and sucked on his paci so he wouldn't get hair in his mouth.

"...never, ever let it cool!" This time of year (and the rest of the year, for that matter) JJ's favorite movie is "The Polar Express." He also LOVES hot chocolate so after he helped me shovel our whole driveway, we sat and enjoyed a little hot chocolate and watched our movie.

During Luke's morning nap I took JJ outside to play in the snow...which he LOVES. I don't get to do it that often with him because it is quite tricky to handle Luke (can't walk, or really maneuver in the snow) and JJ on my own. So, we had a special snow play date!

We had a monitor on so we could listen for Luke. When he woke up they took baths before dinner and played in their diapers for a while...I couldn't resist a shot of THIS!

Some of my favorite times are sneaking into the boys' room after they've gone to sleep to check on them. I can't help but snuggle them sometimes because they are just too cute. Here is JJ, fast asleep from a good play day. little wind burn on his face from playing outside.

On New Year's Eve Adam, Lisa, and Isaac came over to play games with us. Lisa, being newly pregnant, didn't quite last until midnight. So, the four of us stayed up playing games and eating tasty bruschetta Jared and Isaac made...tasty!!

On New Year's day Jared and I took the boys sledding in the back yard. We had a blast - even little Luke was a trooper and enjoyed it!

On Christmas morning we had breakfast in Rudy & Marta's room...YUMMY eggs, sweet rolls, bacon, etc etc.

After breakfast, we head down the stairs to open presents!

Jared got us some new snow gear so we could play in the snow as a family!

I put together all of the photos from our wedding and Tiffany made a Wedding album for us (now that it's been almost 5 years, I guess we should finally take care of that!) You can see that I might possibly be more excited about it than anyone!!

This is a picture of the new ping pong table that was waiting for us at home in our basement! (Jared got me some boots and other really cool clothes but somehow we didn't get pics! Thanks lovey!)

Christmas Eve 2009

Mom and Dad came to visit for Christmas this year. It was so wonderful to have them with us for the Holidays. On Christmas Eve we participated in a service project, got some last minute shopping in, and had a tasty dinner. After dinner we participated in a Christmas show at the nursing home.

What Keeps Us Busy...Among Other Things! (Oct - Dec 2009)

Jared and I were asked to participate in a Christmas show our Stake did for the community called, "Christ: A Timeless Gift to All." We had no idea the commitment and energy this would take, but it was SO worth it. There were a lot of late nights and long Saturdays. Our boys spent a lot of time with Papa Rudy and other wonderful friends who were willing to watch them while we prepared for the show. They also spent some long Saturdays with us at rehearsal. They had their own room with beds set up for naps and everything! For Jared, this all came naturally as he did many shows throughout junior high and high school. I, on the other hand, had almost NO experience with shows. SO, there were lots of learning experiences for me. It was a wonderful experience I am so grateful to have been a part of.

This show was put on mainly by the youth of the stake, but they asked a few of us adults to participate as well. We were in two dance numbers. One was a Fox Trot to "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" (just adults) and the other was a fast paced fun dance to "Haul out the Holly" (adult & youth dancers).

So, just before they opened the doors on opening night, I asked for one more try and somehow I got it okay! I was praying so hard not to have fear but to just give it my all - I was grateful for the extra help :)

Luke discovered JJ's little scooter and LOVES it! He loves all of the sounds it makes and he's even learning that it's fun to sit on...riding will come later!

Every night before Jared and I go to bed, we go in and check on the boys. We went into JJ's room and looked in his bed only to find him not there! It was dark in his room and we couldn't see him at first so we were a little confused. Then we looked over at his big bean bag chair and there he was, all snuggled up with Mickey and his blanket. What a precious little guy!

So, what do you do when you find your child sleeping soundly? You flip on the lights and take a picture!

Thanksgiving 2009

For Thanksgiving Jared and I loaded up the boys and drove to Palmyra, NY to visit John, Kristy, and the kids. We had such a great time that I forgot to take very many pictures! We were able to head over to see the Hill Cumorah, The Sacred Grove, and Joseph Smith's home. It was so good to be there and feel the joy of the sacred events that took place there.

Jared and I had been contemplating when we should stop giving JJ his pacifier (paci). Since he was a year old, he was only aloud to have it in his bed to sleep, but we were thinking he didn't really need it anymore. It just so happened that when JJ took a nap at Grandma Marta's house, we accidentally left his paci there. So that night as we're putting JJ to bed, Jared asked me where the paci was. When we realized we had left it at Marta's we decided to let that be the end of his paci! He did really well. He fussed a little bit, but really did fine without it.

I took these pictures a few days earlier when I found JJ snuggled in his bean bag sucking on his paci - sneaky little guy!

Our [short] Trip to Florida

Jared had a work trip to Florida and wives were invited - WAHOO! We were so excited. Marta and Lisa were kind enough to agree to watch our kiddos for the three days we would be gone. Jared and I were so excited to get away for a little while. We left on a Thursday morning and were able to have lunch, do some shopping, and attend a work dinner. Around 11 PM we received a call from Marta saying that Luke was getting his "barking cough," (Croupe). Luke ended up going to the ER for some special breathing treatments we are all too familiar with. I took the first flight back to Chicago on Friday morning to be with Luke. Luke improved very quickly. The trip was WAY too short, but the time we did have there was wonderful!

JJ's Hospital Visit

JJ got really sick and was having trouble breathing so the Doctor sent us to the ER. It was very traumatic for JJ, to say the least. He didn't want ANYONE to touch or even look at him. I'm pretty sure he cried the ENTIRE time we were in the ER. He had a lot of tests, procedures, pokes, etc. After being in the ER for about 6 hours, they admitted him and we were checked into the pediatric wing. As soon as we stepped into his little room, he was filled with smiles and energy! We couldn't resist getting some cute shots of him in his little hospital gown. Jared spent the night with him at the hospital because they wouldn't let Luke stay. So I took Luke home and we were back first thing in the morning and JJ was release just a few hours later. All of the treatments, pokes, test, etc helped a LOT! We still had to be really careful to be sure he got plenty of rest over the next week or so, but he showed GREAT improvements.

Grandma Gwenn's Funeral

Grandma Gwenn passed away August 5, 2009. She spent her last two months in Chicago with Rudy and Marta. We are so grateful for that time. We miss her but are so grateful that she is finally with her husband and daughter.

So I've been training for a half marathon that I am running in less than a week so I have to do a lot of running. JJ doesn't mind because he knows we end our "bike ride" (he calls the stroller a bike) at the park by our house. And Luke doesn't mind because he usually just sleeps - good boys!!

For the weekend of the 4th, our friends Andrew & Erika Young (and baby Keegan!) came from Cincinnati to visit--we had a blast! We spent the day on Friday in Chicago showing them around the city. That night we played games and ate Giordano's pizza...yum! Saturday we spent the day with Jared's family and my sister Jen and her family. Sunday we went to church, came home and ate lunch, and then sent the Young's on their way...so sad! We had a great weekend and hope to see them again soon. Thanks for making the trip guys!

Croup

Our boys seem to like scaring us with their little respiratory issues...JJ had bronchialitis when he was 5 months and now Luke has croup! It started Tuesday morning and so I took him to the pediatrician who told us he had croup, but that it was so early that we really needed to watch him in case it got worse.

He stayed about the same until he woke up from his nap yesterday around 4:30p. He was having a tough time breathing. I called the pediatrician and he sent me over to the acute care center. They didn't have all they needed to help him there, so they sent us over to the ER (they wanted him to go in an ambulance, but I had a calm feeling that he was going to be just fine so we signed a waiver and I loaded him in the car...off we went!).

Once at the ER, he had two different breathing treatments and an oral steroid. He showed huge improvements after those. His "bark" of a cough started going away and he was breathing much better. The pediatrician on call wanted to keep him there overnight to be monitored.

So, they admitted him around midnight and he and I stayed the night in the pediatric wing. (very cute wing, by the way - I delivered both boys at Lake Forest Hospital and they are just amazing. They treat us so well.) The pediatrician said that if he was able to get through the night without anymore treatments, that we would be able to go home first thing in the morning. He passed that test with flying colors. In fact, all of the nurses were so surprised he was sleeping through the night. What a good little guy!

Meanwhile, Marta had been at home with JJ and put him to bed. Jared went home once we were admitted and spent the night with him. In the morning Jared took JJ over to to play with Marta and the Fisher's. We're now all home and happy - thanks to all of our great help!

Friday Night Fun

When Jared got home from work last Friday night, we headed over to the pond with Rudy, Michelle, Sam, and kids to look for frogs! That morning Michelle took Anna over and they found tons. We only saw a few that night, but we had a blast looking!

Happy Memorial Day

Jared and I started off Memorial Day with a 10k run in a beautiful little neighborhood just west of Chicago. Jared finished in 49 minutes and I finished in 57!! My goal was to stay under an hour. I was exhausted when it was over and I felt like an old lady with aches and pains, but I felt so happy that I finished!!

Later on that day, we went to the ward BBQ at Rudy & Marta's house - JJ had a blast playing outside while Jared and a bunch of other guys played football.

More yard projects

Jared took the Friday before Memorial Day off from work so we could do a little bit of yard work--you know, spread mulch, weed, that sort of thing. We went to Home Depot to get our mulch and ended up getting sucked into the lawn and garden section. Before leaving the store, we decided we would rip out the shrubs by our front door (we never liked them) and plant some small plants and flowers. Here is the only before picture I could find...use your imagination!

And, here is a during picture! This is Jared tying the tree to the frame of his car...no worries, the rope broke before anything scary happened!

Yes, we got ourselves in a bit over our heads. Good thing we had a neighbor with a tree root grinder who happened to pass by and see us in distress! For a small fee, he chopped down all of the bushes and ground all of the roots.

And our finished project!

Rudy and Marta showed up on their motorcycle with gardening gloves ready to work. We had this planted and finished in just a few hours!

Luke was blessed by Jared on Sunday, April 12, 2009 at Rudy & Marta's home. It was a perfect day for his blessing as it was Easter and also our stake conference where we got to hear the prophet, President Monson, speak.

We chose to do Luke's blessing on Easter because we got a special visit from my brother, Bill (where we got the "William" in Luke's name), and his family came to visit from North Carolina. It was so good to have them visit. Thanks for making the trek guys!

We LOVE having my sister, Jen Hansen, and her family live in Wisconsin - just an hour drive from us. We are sad to see them head back to Idaho this summer! We will miss you guys!

During a late night grocery shopping trip in Wisconsin with Michelle, my labor began! When I got home, Jared and I finalized our packing, loaded up JJ, and headed to Rudy & Marta's to drop him off. We got him settled and checked into the hospital by about 1:30 AM. Everything went very smoothly and Luke arrived just after 4 AM, weighing 7 lbs 4 oz and measuring 19 1/2 inches long.
